Martin Elsaesser practised as an architect for over fifty years, spanning several periods of German history, with almost no restrictions, as this first comprehensive monograph on his work illustrates. It is the drive and the tensions inherent in his work that make Elsaesser’s body of work and influence so fascinating. Throughout his life, he saw himself as a proponent of Modernism, who understood architecture as a discipline in constant evolution and sought to protect it from superficial externalisation. His approach to communication and his aversion to dogmas remain highly relevant to the architecture of the present and the future.

Now, architectural historian and Elsaesser scholar Jörg Schilling presents a nuanced perspective on this highly prolific and versatile architect – who was marginalised under the Nazi regime – in a comprehensive, richly illustrated monograph. The Martin Elsaesser Foundation, established in 2009 by Elsaesser’s descendants following a settlement with the European Central Bank and the City of Frankfurt, has made this lavishly produced publication possible following extensive research.
